Typical uses for a server are store files, manage virus protection updates, route email, centralize users and passwords and file level security to name a few. A server can provide a safe place to store your critical files. The primary advantage to a server in my opinion, is a central area for your important documents to be stored. A high percentage of companies fail after significant data loss and a server can mitigate data loss. Just a few points: You need to know where all your data is at all times. It needs to be BACKED UP onsite and offsite.

Server products:

Windows Small Business Server 2003, 2008, and 2011
